Eternal Darkness is the 46th episode of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, written by Misty Stewart and directed by Lou Kachivas. A series of nightmares in the Royal Palace reveals that Darkdream has escaped from his prison, and He-Man must stop him from darkening Eternia with a permanent solar eclipse.
Synopsis[]
Adam, Cringer, Randor, Marlena, Duncan and Teela all suffered from nightmares simultaniously. Adam and his pet even shared the same nightmare, involving Slime Monsters. Randor and Duncan's dreams revealed that Darkdream was behind their unrest, a villain who had been sealed in the Chamber of Darkness some time earlier by Man-At-Arms personaly. In Duncan's nightmare, Darkdream announced that he was no longer a prisoner. The following morning they all gathered and discussed the possibity of Darkdream's return.
Darkdream had already summoned Evil-Lyn (Filmation) and the wizard Tavor to him and ordered them to find a way to put Eternia in total darkness. The two magic users told him it was impossible, but Darkdream insisted they find a way. After considering the matter, Tavor and Evil-Lyn came up with a plan to move Eternia's moon and cause a permanent solar eclipse.
At the palace, Orko also felt sleep deprived, but in his case it was due to his exemplory hearing picking up explosions being set off in the Crimson Valley. Teela, Adam and Duncan speculate that these explosions could possibly have broken the seal to the Chamber of Darkness, allowing Darkdream to extend his powers over Eternia again. Adam and Teela each jumped on a Sky-Sled to investigate. But Darkdream overtook Teela's mind while she was flying. Adam quickly landed his sled and transformed into He-Man so he could save her. By the time Teela woke up, he had turned back into Adam again, and Teela was surprised to hear that the prince helped her get down safely.
Tavor began to chant his spell to move the moon, with Evil-Lyn using her wand to back him up. Adam and Teela returned to Eternos and reported that the seal had indeed been broken. Man-At-Arms wanted to reseal it immediately, before the sun set and Darkdream's power grew even stronger. Suddenly, the three of them as well as cringer began to float up to the ceiling. Just as quickly, they crashed back to the floor and now found it hard to lift their legs. They realized it was getting dark, and understood that gravity was pulling them down because the moon had been pulled out of it's orbit. The moon was going to collide with Eternia. They decided to head to Grayskull for help.
By this time, Darkdream had finally escaped from his prison, and together with his two accomplices arrived outside Castle Grayskull before the heroic warrors did. Inside, the Sorceress and Stratos had grown concerned about the eclipse, and the Sorceress took on the form of Zoar the falcon to investigate. The trio of evil doers spotted the falcon, without realizing who it was, but Stratos grabbed Evil-Lyn's wand before she could do anything and tossed it to Zoar, who caught it in her beak. Darkdream ordered two Netherbats to capture the falcon, and she dropped the wand, which Evil-Lyn caught and used to trap Stratos with a cable.
Man-At-Arms, Teela, Adam and Cringer arrived in a Wind Raider just as Darkdream called out to the Sorceress (whom he believed to still be inside the castle) that he had come to rule Grayskull. When Man-At-Arms explained the moon was about to wipe out Eternia, Darkdream became angry at Tavor. Duncan and Adam realized they could not ask Darkdream to release Zoar without revealing the Sorceress's secret. Using telepathy, the Sorceress concured and told them to find another way. Adam came up with a plan to use Nodroxyn, but had to transform into He-Man first. After Evil-Lyn decided to flee, Darkdream tried to steal the Wind Raider to escape in, but Man-At-Arms destroyed the vehicle before the villain could get to it.
He-Man and Battle Cat took Teela, who had been put to sleep again by Darkdream, up a mountaintop. He selected a large rock, which Teela filled with Nodroxyn. He-Man then threw the rock at the moon, where the explosive caused it to return to it's original orbit. When the sun returned, Darkdream was defeated and quickly retreated with Tavor and the Netherbats.
Back at the palace, Man-At-Arms told the others to enjoy the rest of the sunny day. Orko suggested a picnic. But when he conjured up food from his hat, he also caused a rain cloud to appear over Man-At-Arms' head. And when he tried to get Duncan out of the rain, Man-At-Arms ended up in a large transparent bubble instead.
Moral[]
Teela: "In today's story, I had a bad dream. You know, bad dreams or nightmares happen to everyone. and they can seem pretty real. But they aren't. They're no more real than any make-believe story or fairy tale. So don't be ashamed or afraid of telling anybody about your dreams. It happens to all of us. And like so many other things, talking it over with your mother or your father, or maybe even a good friend, can make you feel a whole lot better. Bye for now, and... pleasant dreams!"

Behind the Scenes[]
- Script was approved May 5, 1983 and final script revision took place June 22, 1983.
- The story was loosely based on an early Filmation script premise called "Eclipse on Eternia" which featured Skeltor creating an eclipse, forcing He-Man to rearrange the planets.
Continuity[]
- This is the first time Teela is seen without her tiara. The second will occur in The Witch and the Warrior.
- The animation of Orko after Man-At-Arms compliments his hearing is reused from the scene in Disappearing Act shortly before he and Cringer enter the Time Corridor.
- When Prince Adam and Teela run through the Palace to their Sky-Sleds, the Photon Cannon weapons from Reign of the Monster can be seen in the background.
- The Royal Palace courtyard where He-Man and Teela jump onto their Sky-Sleds to go to the Crimson Valley. was first seen in A Friend in Need when Jarvan re-materializes there.
- The Sorceress transforms into Zoar in front of Stratos, revealing he know her secret identity as the falcon.
Errors[]
- In this story and in Jacob and the Widgets, it is stated that Eternia has only one moon. But in The Shadow of Skeletor, Into the Abyss and the She-Ra: Princess of Power episode He Ain't Heavy there are more than one.
- When Orko tells Duncan about the explosions in the Crimson Valley, the tiny Trollan is too large in proportion with Man-At-Arms.
- During the moral segment, the scene in which Teela wakes up from her nightmare is shown again, but this time it is much more brightly lit than it was originally.
