Production[]
In December 2019, it was announced that Netflix was developing a new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in CGI animated series. Rob David was developing the series and was also producing with Adam Bonnett, Christopher Keenan, Jeff Matsuda and Susan Corbin. Bryan Q. Miller was serving as story editor on the series. Animation services were being provided by House of Cool and CGCG.[1]
Moreover, Netflix's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe drastically altered the source material to craft a story about Eternia for a new generation. Prince Adam and his crew were turned into teens, with Season 1 shifting how Keldor/Skeletor used Havoc to power up his fiends: turning R'Qazz into Beast Man, Kronis into Trap Jaw and Evelyn into the mage, Evil-Lyn, while in season 2, Tri-Klops became a machine, etc.[4]
Trivia[]
- In this version, Adam was kidnapped as a child by his uncle Keldor and ended up being raised by a jungle tribe instead of at the Royal Palace of Eternos. This hearkens back to "He-Man and the Power Sword", the very first minicomic released with the Masters of the Universe toys in 1982 in which He-Man left a jungle tribe seeking adventure.
- It is also reminiscent of She-Ra's origin in The Secret of the Sword, in which she was kidnapped as a baby from the palace in Eternia by Hordak (with help from Skeletor) and raised on another planet.
- This marks as the first He-Man incarnation to be a full CGI series with the background effects like smoke and fire to be 2D animated. Previous or current running series use CGI animation for only vehicles, robots, background characters or giant monsters.
- On March 17, 2022, Mattel released the 2021 version of He-Man alongside an older version of He-Man, his twin sister She-Ra, their predecessor He-Ro, and the separately created but now integrated diversity-positive hero Sun-Man.[5]
