In 2002, Mattel released a new line of Masters of the Universe toys. Sculpted by the Four Horsemen, the new figures were both more detailed and more stylised than previous lines. The toyline was relatively short-lived, with some ascribing its failure to distribution and shortpacking problems.

With the demise of the toy line in 2004, various characters were not released as action figures. To fill the void in fans' collections, NECA announced a line of 6-inch, non-poseable mini-statues designed to complement the existing toys.[ 1] These "staction figures" were produced until 2007, shortly before the launch of the Masters of the Universe Classics line.
