Orlax

The Orlax of Primeria was a one-eyed, multi tentacled creature that appears in the Masters of the Universe: Revelation.

The Orlax was a magical creature that existed in two different dimensions at once. It traveled from Primeria to Eternia 500 years before the time of He-Man. The first beings it met were General Hiss and the Snake Men, who, realizing its attempts to communicate with Eternians proved fatal, enslaved the creature and used it to attack King Grayskull and his family. The Orlax touched young D'Are Littlegray with one of its tentacles, causing the boy to fall into an immediate coma. The Orlax also grabbed and picked up Grayskull's youngest son, Ro Littlegray, but the boy managed to avoid falling under the same spell as his brother D'Are.

When Grayskull found himself unable to hurt the creature with his sword, the Elders explained to him that it existed in two different dimensions at once, and that any would needed to be inflicted in both dimensions simultaniously. Grayskull created the Sword of Power to defeat the Orlax, and severed one of its limbs to frighten the beast back to Primeria. However, the Orlax soon returned for another attack, only to lose another limb to the same Power Sword, this time wielded by a mysterious visiting hero from the future.

However, D'are did not awake from his ailment. Grayskull's wife, Veena, realized that he had not been poisoned, but the Orlax's touch formed a psychic connection too strong for human minds to process. She concluded that the Orlax may have merely been trying to communicate with them.

Five hundred years later, the Orlax reappeared in the Royal Palace of Eternos. Again, because of its existence in two dimensions at once, none of the weapons used by the Royal Guards had any effect on it. This time its poisonous touch caused King Randor to fall into a deep sleep. He-Man traveled back in time using the Cosmic Corridor to learn more about the Orlax, and took the tentacle he severed from it back with him to his own time.

At Castle Grayskull, the severed limb swiftly regenerated itself into the full Orlax. The Sorceress imprisoned the creature in a cell fortified by her magic, in the hopes of learning how to heal King Randor of his affliction and perhaps, also to learn what brought the creature to Eternia in the first place. The Heroic Warriors now realized that the Orlax was afraid to touch them, not wanting to put them into danger, but also knew that it was not in full control of itself.

However, the Heroic Warriors were unaware that the Orlax was being manipulated by the combined efforts of Skeletor and Evil-Lyn, who were trying to translate the Orlax's warning, the whole reason it came to Eternia half a millennium earlier.[1]

Some time later, after Skeletor obtained the Power of Grayskull and became Skelegod. Duncan, the former Man-At-Arms of Eternos was locked in a cell at Castle Grayskull. He was surprised to find the Orlax still residing there, its tentacles reaching through a hole in the floor and reaching out to him. After 30 hours, the Orlax swill would not stop attacking, until Skelegod arrived and put it to sleep. Duncan expressed surprise for the fact that Skelegod had not simply killed the Orlax, but Skelegod explained that it was impossible to kill it.[2]

After a while the Orlax calmed down and ceased its attack. Duncan promised to get it help and noticed the distinctive properties of the Orlax's ooze. When Evil-Lyn, now the new Sorceress of Grayskull, visited Duncan's cell, she gave a display of her powers by inflicting pain upon the Orlax, then taking it away. Duncan accused her of bullying the Orlax.[3]

Duncan managed to escape from his prison by befriending the Orlax and using its highly conductive slime to short out the primary relay. The Orlax used the water that ran trough the castle dungeons to get outside, grabbing two Evil Warriors, Blade and Clawful, with its tentacles along the way and dragging them along.[4]

Trivia[]

  • The Orlax was inspired by the tentacles visible on the dungeon stickers that came with the vintage Castle Grayskull playset. The creature's look for the animated series was designed by Jung-Ha Kim.[5]
  • A tentacle of the Orlax of Primeria is included in the 2021 Power Con exclusive set "Mysteries of Grayskull," packaged together with the Spirit of Grayskull and the Explorer’s Space Suit. All three of these items were created to interact with the already released Castle Grayskull playset in the "Masters of the Universe Origins" toyline.
