Snakes Alive! was the fourth issue of Marvel Comics' Masters of the Universe ongoing comic series.

Synopsis[]

During a sparring match, Rio Blast becomes frightened by what he believes to be a snake. In reality, it is actually the trunk of Snout Spout, his partner. Rio Blast and Snout Spout, despite their constant arguing, eventually win the game against Prince Adam and Orko.

Snout Spout and Rio Blast argue.

Meanwhile, Kobra Khan convinces Skeletor to release the Snake Men from their imprisonment deep within the bowels of Snake Mountain. While he claims Skeletor would command an army of Snake Men, Khan secretly hopes it will free him from Skeletor's service. Skeletor casts a spell to release the Snake Men, and is introduced to King Hiss, Rattlor and Tung Lashor. Skeletor immediately takes command of the Snake Men, though King Hiss is unhappy at being ordered around. Khan convinces Hiss to go along with Skeletor's demands for now.

Hiss and the Snake Men confront Prince Adam, Orko and Cringer at the Evergreen Forest and capture Cringer. Rio Blast and Snout Spout soon arrive, and the group split into teams to search for the captured Cringer. Adam transforms into He-Man, and Orko transports them both directly to Snake Mountain. Skeletor attacks He-Man with his new Terror Claws Snap Dragon, and manages to seize the sword of power, before the Snake Men take He-Man prisoner.

The Snake Men return!

Meanwhile, Snout Spout and Rio Blast get into an argument and split up. Neither of them are able to find Cringer alone, and are soon found by the Snake Men. Kobra Khan attacks Snout Spout, while King Hiss sheds his human disguise and reveals his true form to a terrified Rio Blast. Eventually, Rio Blast, not wanting to be embarrassed by cowering in front of Snout Spout, overcomes his fear of snakes and forces King Hiss back. As Snout Spout defeats Khan, the two heroes put aside their differences and defeat the Snake Men.

Elsewhere, Orko recovers the sword of power from Skeletor's Terror Claws. Skeletor orders Tung Lashor to retrieve the sword, but when Tung Lashor tries to grab the sword with his tongue, it shocks him with a magical blast. Tired of Skeletor's demands, King Hiss calls for his men to retreat, and they terminate their alliance, claiming they will return in the future. Snout Spout grabs Skeletor, but the lord of destruction teleports himself to safety, swearing revenge.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Snout Spout reveals that he used to be an Eternia firefighter.
  • The Snake Men were imprisoned by the Elders centuries ago in a black box beneath Snake Mountain, but little else is revealed about their origins.
  • Unlike other portrayals of the character, King Hiss is shown here to be weak willed and easily dominated by Skeletor. Hiss ultimately retreats at the end of the issue and swears he will return, but this is his sole appearance in the comics. His Snake Men do return, however.
  • Skeletor refers to Kobra Khan as his "sneakiest" henchman. It is not clear at the end of the issue whether Khan has fled with the other Snake Men, or whether he remains in service to Skeletor.
  • Skeletor again uses the "Terror Claws" he created in the first issue, only this time, he has a snapping dragon added to them, completing the look of the "Terror Claws Skeletor" action figure.
  • Kobra Khan sports a unique, brown, colour scheme in this issue, rather than his usual green colour.
  • Though appearing prominently on the cover, Hordak does not appear in this issue at all.
