The Sword of Power as seen in the Mike Young Productions animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2002).

History[]

The Sword of Power was wielded by King Grayskull against the Horde and the Snake Men long ago. Upon his death, Grauskull infused the sword with his spirit, lending his strength, kindness, and wisdom to weapon's user whenever his ancestral name was invoked.

The sword remained safely at Castle Grayskull, protected by the Sorceress until she presented it to young Prince Adam in a special box. The sword would shrink and retract somewhat when wielded by Adam, only to grown and have its hilt unfurl when transforming him into He-Man.

In extreme circumstances the blade itself could also split open to reveal a green cyrstal at its center, which He-Man activated when the enormous snake deity Serpos threatened Grayskull. He-Man used the sword's power in this configuration to destroy the beasts' body and called forth the Elders to return its spirit back to its stone prison.

Behind the Scenes[]

According to designers the Four Horsemen, this was due to their original re-sculpts being intended for a continuation of the original storyline in which Skeletor had obtained both halves of the Power Sword (hence the new Skeletor figure's dual blades with clear "good" and "evil" hilt designs), necessitating a new sword to be built by Man-At-Arms and endowed with the properties of the original by the Sorceress. However, Mattel decreed that they wished to reboot the continuity for a new generation of children, and thus the "new" Power Sword design became the "original" version for the new continuity.
